The painter's palette : Ground, Climate and Grape variety

The Chalk ground of the Champagne Vineyards

The vineyards are planted on a thick layer of chalk dating from the pre-history. This chalk is a special variety (belemnita quadrata) which gives its needs to the vine :it keeps and then releases the warmness or the humidity successively; it brings to the vine the mineral elements and brings to the grape a strong originality, which marks the diversity of each terroir and wines that you can taste in Champagne.

The special climate

The annual average temperature of the Champagne Region is 10.5°c. This is the extreme limit for a good maturity of the grape. The variation of altitude and sun exposure give a lot of micro-climate. Surprisingly, this very difficult conditions give the exceptionnal quality that are looked for to obtain a good wine of Champagne.
